Overview

HHM CPAs has called a restored 19th-century railroad freight depot in downtown Chattanooga home since 2007, and over time, the historic building became an important part of the firm’s identity and culture. As HHM continued to grow and expanded its services to include wealth management, the firm needed additional space without compromising the character of the depot that had served it so well.

River Street Architecture + Interiors partnered with HHM to design a new four-story office building adjacent to the historic depot on a former parking lot along King Street. The 28,400-square-foot addition was designed to support the firm’s continued growth while allowing the original structure to remain intact and central to the campus.

The new building strengthens the King Street edge and complements the historic depot while giving HHM the flexibility and functionality it needed for its evolving team. The design includes private and open offices, conference and training rooms, a shared café designed to support staff during tax season, a fitness studio, and a second-floor terrace overlooking King Street. The ground floor was also planned with future retail or alternate use in mind, creating long-term flexibility beyond the firm’s immediate needs.

Throughout the project, River Street focused on creating a building that felt connected to its historic context without trying to replicate it. Durable masonry, slate cladding, and high-performance glazing give the new structure its own architectural identity while helping ensure it will continue to serve HHM well into the future.
